American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus)
Today I had another sighting of the American Bittern at different location from yesterday. To find these birds, look around marshes and wet meadows. When seen they typically freeze and don't flush like other herons. The courtship display is rarely seen. The male arches his back, shortens his neck, dips his breast forward and booms at the female. Both birds engage in complicated aerial displays...something I would love to see!
