Mourning Doves Nestlings - 1st one hatched this morning and 2nd one hatched this afternoon. Just a short video clip while mom was off the nest.
Cold wet weather is the worst condition for martins to survive because flying insects typically become inactive when the temperature drops below 48º F which completely cuts off their food supply. Martins are also highly susceptible to hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperatures, and may die of exposure after several days of extremely cold weather. Martins try to conserve body heat by clustering together in a single cavity or two and remaining inactive. This helps them to conserve their energy which is vital for their survival during these times of severe cold. Martins on the interior of this cluster are more likely to survive than the ones on the outside which may still succumb to exposure.
Bobolink habitat is hayfields, grasslands and agricultural areas. They sing a song of a jumble of bubbling warbles with harsh notes that are intermixed.
These guys love grape jelly, sugar water and red grapes. If you put out white string, yarn or hair cut in lengths of 6 inches, the birds will snatch it up and use for nesting material.
Like other blue birds, Indigo Buntings lack blue pigment. Their jewel-like color comes instead from microscopic structures in the feathers that reflect and reflect blue light, much like the airborne particles that cause the sky to look blue.
This image was taken through the window on May 21, 2013. I started out with only a few hummingbirds this morning but by this evening the numbers grew. The video was taken with my cell phone through the window around 8 pm. Lighting is poor but this clip gives you an idea what I was seeing through every window that had a nectar feeder close by. A small critter I have never seen before. I actually saw 2 of these squirrels and thought they were pretty cool looking. Nature is full of surprises! A new life bird in my backyard! This image is about 60% cropped and it was cloudy out so not a good quality image but a snapshot for my life list of birds.
Today I captured this image through the window when I saw mate feeding behavior which is a good indication of the pair's breeding stage. This is the first time I have ever seen a chickadee feed it's mate. He is feeding her dried mealworm. She was fed several times before the pair flew off.
